Most detachable models use an A2-style carry handle rear sight, but that does not turn the rifle into an M16A2 or make the upper a fixed-handle receiver.

Know the A2 Carry Handle Controls Before Installation

A detachable A2 carry handle is both a mounting body and a rear sight. Before tightening anything, flip and turn each control so you know what it does. The U.S. Army's rifle and carbine training circular identifies the carry handle as an integrated rear aperture with both windage and elevation adjustment and assigns distinct jobs to its two apertures.

  • Windage knob: the knob beside the rear aperture moves the rear sight left or right. It is the normal horizontal correction during zeroing.
  • Elevation drum: the numbered drum under the sight raises or lowers the rear-sight assembly for range settings. The markings and baseline differ among rifle- and carbine-pattern assemblies, so identify your part before copying someone else's click count.
  • Small aperture: the precision aperture used for zeroing and for normal mid- or extended-range work.
  • Large aperture: commonly marked 0-2, intended for close-range, moving-target, or limited-visibility use.
  • Clamp knobs and crossbolts: the two mounting controls that secure the handle to the upper receiver. They attach the sight; they do not adjust point of impact.

How to Install an AR-15 Carry Handle Step by Step

  1. Make the rifle safe. Point it in a safe direction, remove the magazine, lock the bolt open, and visually and physically inspect the chamber, bolt face, and magazine well. Keep ammunition off the bench while you mount the sight.
  2. Inspect the mating surfaces. Wipe debris and excess oil from the upper-receiver rail, crossbolts, and clamp faces. Confirm that neither clamp is reversed, bent, or trapped at an angle.
  3. Loosen both knobs evenly. Open the clamps only far enough for the handle to settle over the rail. Do not remove the knobs unless the manufacturer's instructions require disassembly.
  4. Seat the handle on the upper receiver. Place it toward the rear of the flat-top upper, not on the handguard and never bridging the receiver-to-handguard joint. Both crossbolts must drop completely into Picatinny slots.
  5. Square and preload the mount. Hold the handle flat on the rail and press it forward so the crossbolts reference the same faces of their slots. This gives you a repeatable seating direction if the handle is later removed and reinstalled.
  6. Tighten in stages. Alternate between the front and rear knobs until both clamps contact evenly, then apply the manufacturer's stated torque or tightening method. A generic internet torque number is not a substitute for the instructions supplied with your handle.
  7. Perform a movement check. Grasp the handle and try to rock it side to side and lift it vertically. There should be no movement, visible gap, or clamp hanging below the rail at an angle.

Do not solve a loose fit by crushing the knobs with a long tool. Stop and check rail compatibility, clamp orientation, damaged threads, and whether both crossbolts are actually in slots. Over-tightening can damage hardware without correcting a handle that was never seated correctly.

M4 Carry Handle Setup: Aperture and Baseline

For an M4-style setup, begin with the small aperture selected and the elevation drum at the baseline prescribed for that specific sight and zero method. Many detachable carbine handles use a 6/3-marked drum, while rifle-pattern sights may use an 8/3 marking. The marking is a clue, not proof that the sight's internal thread pitch and click values match a military assembly. Commercial copies vary.

Treat the elevation drum as a calibrated range control only after the mechanical zero has been confirmed. During zeroing, horizontal correction normally comes from the rear windage knob and vertical correction from the front sight post under the procedure you are following. Spinning the range drum until a group lands on target may hide an incorrect baseline and leave the range markings meaningless.

Which Rear-Sight Aperture Should You Use?

Use the small aperture for the initial zero because its tighter opening gives a more repeatable sight picture in normal daylight. Center the tip of the front sight post in the rear aperture and focus on the front post, not the target. Use the large 0-2 aperture when speed, close distance, a moving target, or low light makes the larger field of view more valuable than the smaller aperture's precision.

Flipping apertures can change the sight's point of impact on some assemblies because the two holes may not share an identical center. That is another reason to zero and confirm the actual handle on the actual rifle instead of assuming every A2-style copy behaves like a service part.

Pre-Zero Checks That Prevent Bad Range Data

  • Handle security: no rocking, lifting, or shifting under firm hand pressure.
  • Clamp engagement: both clamp bars sit squarely under the rail and both crossbolts pass through rail slots.
  • Sight movement: windage and elevation click positively without binding; the aperture stays upright after it is flipped.
  • Front-sight compatibility: the front sight is present, secure, and appropriate for the flat-top sight height. A rear carry handle cannot correct a mismatched or loose front-sight assembly.
  • Mechanical starting point: use your handle maker's baseline and your chosen zero procedure, not a click recipe copied from a different drum.
  • Repeatable position: note the rail slots used. If you remove the handle, reinstall it in the same slots, seat it in the same direction, and confirm zero before relying on it.

Common Carry Handle Setup Problems

The handle rocks after tightening

One or both crossbolts may be sitting on top of a rail lug, a clamp bar may be caught at an angle, or the part may be dimensionally incompatible with the receiver. Loosen it, reseat it, and inspect before adding more force.

Windage is nearly maxed out before zeroing

Recheck that the handle is square, the rear sight is mechanically centered, and the front sight base or rail-mounted front sight is not canted. Large corrections can indicate an alignment problem that adjustment alone should not conceal.

The elevation drum markings do not match expected clicks

Detachable handles can look alike while using different drum markings, thread pitches, or detents. Identify the manufacturer and follow its instructions. If the maker supplies no reliable specifications, establish and record a confirmed zero rather than promising yourself that the printed numbers are calibrated.
