How to Install an AR with Scope and Iron Sights: A Guide

Hey there, gun enthusiasts! Let's talk about spicing up your AR15 with some sweet sights. I've been tinkering with these bad boys for years, and lemme tell ya, combining iron sights and a scope is a game-changer.

Iron sights are tough as nails and won't let you down, but slap on a scope, and you're suddenly Annie Oakley at long range. The best part? You can switch between 'em faster than you can say "pew pew."

So, grab your tools, and let's pimp out that rifle!

What You'll Need:

  • Allen wrenches (the squiggly ones)
  • Screwdrivers (flat and Phillips, not the drink)
  • Torque wrench (for when "tight enough" ain't enough)
  • Bore sighter (to make sure you're not shooting sideways)
  • AR15 vice block (to keep your baby steady)
  • Anti-seize lube (because nobody likes a sticky situation)
  • In this guide, I'll provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to install both iron sights and a scope on your AR15 rifle platform.

    Iron Sights Installation:

  • Strip your upper receiver bare.
  • Clamp that sucker down with the vice block.
  • Stick the front sight on the gas block and tighten it up.
  • Slap the rear sight on the upper receiver and lock it down.
  • Use the bore sighter to line 'em up right.
  • Lube 'em up to keep 'em pretty.

  • Scope Installation:

  • Clear the upper receiver again on your AR15 rifle platform (if you haven't already).
  • Vice that bad boy up.
  • Mount the scope base and crank it down.
  • Add the scope rings and snug 'em up.
  • Nestle that scope in there and secure it.
  • Bore sight it like a pro to improved accuracy.
  • Lube it up (the scope parts, not the glass, dummy).
  • Combining the Two:

Just follow both sets of steps, and boom – you're rockin' both systems. Use iron sights for close-up action and the scope when you're feeling sniper-y.

    Co-Witness Conundrum:

Co-witnessing refers to the alignment of your iron sights with your red dot sights.

When installing a red dot sight and backup iron sights on your AR15 rifle platform, you will need to decide between absolute or 1/3 co-witness.

When you're adding a red dot, you gotta choose: absolute or 1/3 co-witness.

Absolute co-witness is like PB&J – classic and reliable. Your iron sights and red dot line up perfectly. It's great for quick transitions and consistency.

1/3 co-witness is for the fancy folks. Your iron sights sit lower, giving you a clearer view through the red dot. It's comfy but might slow you down a tad when switching.

Personally, I've found it comes down to what feels right for you. Try both if you can – you might surprise yourself.

    Troubleshooting Tips:

    • Scope looking wonky? Check if it's level and tight.
    • AR15 iron sights off? Adjust 'em with the screws or use a bore sighter.
    • Things feeling loose? Tighten 'em up, but don't go Hulk on 'em.
    • Scope blurry? Fiddle with the eyepiece or check the mount.
    • Iron sights blocking your scope view? Raise the scope or adjust your stance.

Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is the perfect sight setup. Take your time, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Wrapping It Up: Adding both iron sights and a scope to your AR15 is like giving it superpowers. Just follow these steps, use the right tools, and you'll be nailing bullseyes in no time.
